Ouroboros

I always thought Ouroboros was a cool concept.  However, I never knew that the Armadillo Lizards (Cordylus cataphractus) are actual living little versions of the mythical creature!

This creepy Goya painting has long been one of my favorites.  It depicts the Roman god Saturn (the Greek variant is named Kronos or Cronus) devouring one of his children to prevent the prophesy of them overturning him from coming true.

(SPOILER: His son Jupiter [Greek name: Zeus] did overthrow Saturn/Kronos anyways).

You can read about the painting here.

You can also read the literary source for this wonderful painting, which is a poem called The Theogeny written by the Greek Hesiod who lived sometime in the 8th century BCE.

And here’s a bonus painting by Rubens illustrating the Greek version of the story, where Cronus is devouring Poseidon.  Good stuff.

“Corridor of Penii.”
Man, I’ve been living in the Bmore area all my life (I even grew up in Cockeysville), and just noticed this now.  Is it just a slightly unfortunate set of coincidental wang-names?  I think not…

Theobroma

I really wanna try this beer.  It’s based on “molecular” evidence of the Aztec’s drinking alcoholic chocolate drinks from 1,200 B.C. (500 years earlier than humans were previously thought to consume cocoa!).

Sounds delicious!

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass.  I’m all out of bubblegum” - ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper in John Carpenter’s 1988 classic film They Live.  What a rad movie.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Even though it’s been released since April, I just finished my first listen-through of The Easy Star All-Stars *Reggae (Dub)* ‘cover’ of The Beatles’ groundbreaking 1967 classic, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band, much like their previous two releases (Dub Side of the Moon, & RadioDread, it’s both mind-blowingly unique, yet somehow quite faithful and respectful, considering the whole genre transposition and all…

All of the tracks are great, with their individual Dub spin, so I chose to post “Lovely Rita”, as opposed to the more usual suspect (e.g. “Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds”).

Awesome 3D Fractals: "Mandelbulb: The Unravelling of the Real 3D Mandelbrot Fractal"

A refreshing take on the familiar 2D Mandelbrot set.  Very beautiful (and nerdy).

I love this type of residential-yet-industrial-looking photography.  If I had to guess, I’d imagine London?  Though the building in the distance (cropped off near the far top-right) makes me second guess myself.

I didn’t re-blog this so much for the phallic-art; I’m just a huge Kubrick fanatic, and A Clockwork Orange is one of my favorite Kubrick films (as well as films in general.  And the book was awesome too).

Mini Movie Review: "Spoorloos" - 1988

Spoorloos Box

Spoorloos (Dutch):

  1. [Adj.] trackless
  2. [Adv.] without leaving a trace

I usually don’t write Movie Reviews, but something just randomly reminded me of this masterpiece that I’d seen a few months ago and had to at least mention it.

The fact that this film scores a perfect score (100%!) on Rotten Tomatoes (R.T.) only hints at how stunning (and creepy) it is.

It’s a Dutch/French “Psychological Thriller”, and I think that moniker fits it to a ‘T’.  The plot/storyline are brutally cringe-inducing, although it never shows any blood/gore or real disturbing violence, it’s actually what is not shown that drives the viewer into a total state of anxiety.

Perhaps since it’s a foreign film, most of us stateside have never even heard of this film, let alone had the (dis?)pleasure of watching it.  However, you just may be familiar with it’s pitiful 1993 Hollywood remake: The Vanishing, ‘starring’ Kiefer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges (The Dude!), & Sandra Bullock.  Unlike the original, it scored a measly 42% on R.T. This is due in part, no doubt, because the director insists on ruining it by adding extra violence, dumbing it down, and changing the ending.  The most interesting part, for me, is the fact that it’s actually directed by the same guy who did the original, George Sluizer.

Well I don’t want to give too much of this classic’s plot away (even though you basically know what happens after the first 15 minutes), but I must give major props to the actor who played the antagonist, Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu.  This dude manages to convincingly portray a very intelligent and twisted individual, with a dual personality, of sorts.

So do yourself a favor and find a copy of this movie (the original, not the derivative Hollywood remake).

If you’re intrigued by my review, but can’t find the movie, contact me and I’ll see if I can help you out.

Enjoy!

Every night I’m lyin’ in bed
holdin’ you close in my dreams,
thinkin’ about all the things that we said
and comin’ apart at the seams.

We try to talk it over
But the words come out too rough.
I know you were tryin’
To give me the best of your love.

Beautiful faces and loud empty places,
look at the way that we live
Wastin’ our time on cheap talk and wine
left us so little to give.

That same old crowd was like a cold dark cloud
that we could never rise above
but here in my heart
I give you the best of my love.

O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ you get the best of my love
You get the best of my love
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ you get the best of my love
You get the best of my love

I’m goin’ back in time and it’s a sweet dream,
it was a quiet night and I would be all right
if I could go on sleeping.

But every mornin’ I wake up and worry
what’s gonna happen today.
You see it your way and I see it mine
but we both see it slippin’ away.

You know we always had each other, baby,
I guess that wasn’t enough.
Oh, but here in my heart
I give you the best of my love.

O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ every night and day
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ oo-oo-oo-oo oo-oh
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ you get the best of my love
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
O-o-o-oh sweet darlin’ you got it, you got it
You get the best of my love
The best of my love

"

These Eagles lyrics are dedicated to a special person no longer in my life.  The massive irony here being the fact that we both absolutely “hate the fuckin’ Eagles” (see this Big Lebowski clip - best movie ever).  In fact, the only thing we hated more than The Eagles was Don Fuckin’ Henley.

Either way, I was actually forced to listen to these lyrics when in traffic the other day, and it reminded me of this person.

I know - I’m a sentimental tool.
